[Almost] Everyone out of the pool!
Div. 1 of the Southern Section playoffs began a week ago Wednesday when Mater Dei, Redondo Union, Sierra Canyon, and Marymount won and Los Alamitos, Huntington Beach, Temecula Valley, and Mira Costa lost the first of three pool play matches.
Pool play continued on Tuesday, with Mater Dei downing Redondo, Sierra Canyon sweeping Marymount, Los Al knocking off Huntington Beach and Costa taking care of Temecula Valley.
Mater Dei, the No. 1 team in the state according to our rankings, survived Redondo’s tough serving to win in four in Pool B. The Monarchs got strong performances from outside hitters Layli Ostovar, who had 16 kills; and Westley Matavao, who contributed 11 kills and a team-high 25 digs.
Los Al also won in Pool B. The Griffins took down league rival Huntington Beach in four sets behind red-hot Katy Foley (17 kills), Kaitlyn Herweg (20 digs), and sophomore middle Charlotte Hall (nine blocks).
Those results guaranteed that Mater Dei would win the pool and play for the title, as the Monarchs (2-0) hold the tiebreaker advantage over both Redondo and Los Al going into Saturday’s match versus 0-2 Huntington Beach. Mater Dei coach Dan O’Dell said that he will use the match to give his eight seniors extensive playing time in a playoff environment.
In Pool A, Sierra Canyon’s throttling of Marymount put the Trailblazers in the driver’s seat for the pool. Stefanie Wigfall’s team used 12 kills from Eva Jeffries, 12 digs from Lauren Lynch, and 22 assists from Lucky Fasavalu to defeat the Sailors for the third time in as many meetings this season.
The Trailblazers are 2-0 heading into tomorrow’s matchup with Mira Costa. Costa, which lost its first pool play match to Marymount in five; stayed in contention by overcoming an 18-14 deficit in Game 1 to defensive-minded Temecula Valley to win in three. The Mustangs got 23 digs from Taylor Deckert and 37 assists from Milly McGee in the win.
The sweep put Mira Costa (1-1) in position to win the pool with a Saturday win over Sierra Canyon even if Marymount (also 1-1) beats Temecula Valley to create a three-way tie at 2-1. But the Mustangs will have to sweep to make it to the championship match. Anything but and Sierra Canyon will meet Mater Dei one week from tomorrow for the title because the Trailblazers would own the tiebreaker over the other two teams.
Of course, that scenario evaporates if Temecula Valley goes to Marymount and knocks off the Sailors. In that case, Mira Costa would just have to win to take the pool. The Mustangs will play Sierra Canyon down a middle, as she suffered an ankle sprain on Tuesday.
The fortunate four
Four teams, Santa Margarita Catholic, Palos Verdes, Etiwanda, and Murrieta Valley, have survived the gauntlet that is the Southern Section Div. 2 playoffs to reach tomorrow’s semifinals.
Santa Margarita overcame 26 kills from Saugus senior Laila Ballard to win in five sets.
PV, which has been in the state Div. I championship match the past two seasons, outlasted Oaks Christian, 33-31 in Game 2 on its way to a sweep.
Etiwanda ousted South Torrance in four sets. Sophomore Lauren Furnald had 16 kills and four aces, Brooke Hansen collected 35 assists, Kelis Hawkins contributed eight blocks and Allina Perales had 18 digs in the win.
Murrieta Valley stayed perfect in five-set matches this year by downing Orange Lutheran, the second straight match where the Nighthawks were taken the distance. Three Murrieta Valley players reached double-digit kill totals in the win, led by Miley Thunstrom, who had 22 and added three aces. Ryleigh Short contributed 17 kills and added three aces of her own.
How did the Diego?
Bishop Diego started the year 15-0, which was good enough for a spot in the South Region top 25. The Cardinals then lost UCLA-bound superstar hitter Eliana Urzua to a significant injury and Dillan Bennett’s team went 8-7 to finish the regular season.
They’re baaaack!
Bishop Diego was placed in Div. 3 – not a top seed – and has won three straight playoff games. Urzua returned to the court for the final regular–season match and has made good progress since – she had 16 kills and four aces in Wednesday’s win over Royal – to help lead the Cardinals into Saturday’s semifinals.
Nicole Schuetz added a dozen kills in the win for Bishop Diego, which also scored often from behind the service line.
All that being said, Bennett stated that the team’s success is largely attributable to the play of freshman setter Karina Urzua.
“For a 14-year-old to have the presence of mind, poise, and game-management skills she does on a big stage is unreal,” he exclaimed. “She's played every match for us this season. Her play in the postseason may not be flashy, but it is a huge key to our success.”
Bennett also lauded Wynter Thorne-Thomsen, Sofia Parisotto, Tara Gregson, Annabelle Aslanian, and Natalie Chan for their significant on-court contributions as the post-season continues.
Rebel yell
Going into the Southern Section playoffs this year, A.B. Miller of Fontana had never won a playoff match dating back to the school’s opening in 1991. Nine times the Rebels had qualified for postseason play. Nine times they’d fallen in the first round.
This year looked to be “same old same old,” as Miller dropped the first two sets and trailed 13-7 in the third to Norte Vista in a Div. 8 clash. Not only did the Rebels rally to win to throw the monkey off the team’s collective back; Miller won its next two matches as well. The Rebels face Garden Grove in a semifinal test tomorrow night.
Join the party!
The Central Coast Section released its playoff brackets yesterday, becoming the last of the sections to do so. Playoffs get underway tomorrow.
The Open Division, for the best teams in the section this season, has eight teams. State-ranked Archbishop Mitty and Saint Francis of Mountain View are seeded 1-2, with the final six teams being Palo Alto, Saint Ignatius, Los Gatos, Menlo-Atherton, Mercy of Burlingame, and Burlingame. All are among the top 16 teams in this week’s Central Region top 25 produced by the CIF State office.
The top seeds in Divisions 1 through 5 also are ranked in the Central Region. Homestead headlines the Div. 1 bracket, Monta Vista tops Div. 2, Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep leads Div. 3, Harbor, the defending CCS champion, is featured atop Div. 4 and Summit Shasta is top dog in Div. 5.
Champions in all divisions will be determined on Saturday.
About this week’s statewide top 25…
The top 16 teams remained the same in this week’s top 25, as the only losses within that group came versus higher-ranked teams.
St. Mary’s of Stockton moved up a few spots after a closer re-examination of its full-season schedule, as did James Logan. James Logan rose because Foothill of Pleasanton made news with a playoff win on Wednesday over Redwood of Larkspur.
James Logan had previously defeated Foothill.
Foothill, which has had a remarkable year after graduating two dominant senior stars, got 18 kills and 15 digs from OH Kaycie Burdick in the win over Redwood. Paige Nelson added 32 assists, 15 digs and 13 kills – a massive effort! – and Lulu Hoenninger added 10 kills and a whopping 10 blocks.
The Redwood win capped an incredible eight-day stretch for the Falcons, during which they also defeated Amador Valley, Carondelet, and San Ramon Valley for the EBAL championship. The Carondelet and SRV wins both went the full five sets.
Foothill’s excellence earned it a spot in this week’s top 25 and ousted Redwood, for now.
Foothill of Pleasanton's incredible week not only sent the Falcons to the EBAL title; it also landed them in the state top 25
Pleasant Grove and Orange Lutheran also snagged top 25 spots, with Saugus and Temecula Valley dropping out.
Pleasant Grove was in the top 25 earlier in the year but fell out after a loss to Oak Ridge on Sept. 28. Last night, the Eagles (27-5) gutted out a five-set playoff win over Oak Ridge in the Sac-Joaquin Section, defeating the Trojans for the second time since that loss.
OLu’s five-set loss to Murrieta Valley pushed the Lancers, despite 13 losses, into the top 25. Henry Valiente’s team has overcome the transfer of Westley Matavao to Mater Dei to remain in the upper echelon behind the play of senior OH Maylynn Mitchell and sophomore setter Marley Robinson.
Of the Lancers’ 13 losses, four have come to out-of-state powers and seven are to teams ranked among the top 16 in the state. The other two are versus Santa Margarita Catholic and JSerra Catholic, but Orange Lutheran is 2-1 this season against each.
In the Southern Section Div. 2 playoffs, when Santa Margarita outlasted Saugus, that dropped Saugus from the top 25. Etiwanda, which is 29-2, seemed like a perfect choice to slot into the rankings. But OLu had defeated Etiwanda earlier in the year (and also Palos Verdes), which was compelling enough to make The List.
One note on Temecula Valley: the Golden Bears were a surprise to make the Div. 1 field in the Southern Section after playing just 19 regular-season matches. They made the top 25 after squaring their books with Murrieta Valley with a win on the last day of the regular season, but being swept by both Sierra Canyon and Mira Costa caused them to fall out.
Looking at results last night from the state top 25…
The San Diego, Central, and Sac-Joaquin Sections were in action yesterday. The top 25 went eight-for-eight in winning playoff matches. This included a dominant performance by No. 6 Cathedral Catholic over a San Dieguito Academy squad that has pulled off more than its share of big wins; and a sweep for injury-riddled Torrey Pines (No. 10 in the state) over The Bishop’s.
Peering beyond the top 25 to the region rankings, San Marcos, No. 16 in the South Region, defeated South Region No. 15 Westview in four sets in an Open Division quarterfinal in the San Diego Section. Those teams are now 2-2 against one another this season.
Seeds held in the Central Region rankings, except for the four-set win by Central Region No. 14 Bakersfield Christian over Central Region No. 6 Clovis in the Central Section Div. I quarterfinals. The Eagles are now 2-0 versus Clovis this year.
News and notes…
We asked coaches on our bulk email list to share any unique, strange, or unusual talents off of the volleyball court by any coaches or players in their programs.
When we made a similar request last year, we learned that San Francisco University head coach Bob Hillman has a parallel career as a singer/songwriter, with seven album releases and tours of both the U.S. and Europe.
This time around, we received only one response but it is a doozy! Emma Kingston, the big-blocking 6-4 sophomore middle from Mater Dei, published her first novel, in the fantasy genre, last year as a freshman! It is called The One Without a Mark and is 344 pages long.

U-Prep of Redding has won five matches in a row, all by sweep. Libero Maddy Rossman, one of only two seniors on a young team that starts two freshmen, has been a catalyst in the run, averaging 4.5 digs per game. She had 466 on the season.
***
Long Beach Poly is on an eight-match winning streak and hasn’t lost a set since Oct. 4. The Jackrabbits are in the Southern Section Div. 3 semifinals after a home sweep on Wednesday over St. Joseph of Lakewood. Senior middle Layla Moore had five big blocks in the win.
***
Maggie Rhew is now a member of the 2,000 assists club thanks to three Oaks Christian playoff matches in the Southern Section Div. 2 playoffs
Maggie Rhew, a senior setter at Oaks Christian, became the school’s career assist leader in the school’s Southern Section Div. 2 quarterfinal playoff loss to Palos Verdes. She now has 2,076 assists all-time, four more than the previous record holder. Rhew broke the 2,000-assist mark in a first-round win over Rancho Christian.

James Logan made its first-ever appearance in the North Coast Section Open playoffs a successful one with a sweep of Carondelet. Mackenzie Anderson had 13 kills and 16 digs and Leann Jung contributed 35 assists and 12 digs. Next up: Marin Catholic in the semifinals on Wednesday.
***
Archbishop Mitty and Saint Francis both won on Wednesday to finish WCAL play at 11-1. The teams split regular-season league matches. Mitty also won a tournament match between the longtime rivals.
***
Etiwanda senior setter Brooke Hansen went over 2,000 career assists on a Senior Night win over Los Osos. The Cal Poly SLO commit has since added almost 100 more assists to her ledger, “a testament to her skill, dedication, and hard work on the court,” said coach Savannah Flores.

Clovis West has reached the Central Section Div. I semifinals. The Golden Eagles parlayed a regular-season closing upset win, in five sets over state-ranked Clovis North, into a 3-seed, then swept past Centennial of Bakersfield in a quarterfinal.
CW head coach Rhonda DeRuiter said that Kalani Soares, Jadyn DeRuiter, Mia Petersen, and Haley Rangel were key to the win over Clovis North.
“After dropping the first league match [between the two] in three sets, CW made the right adjustments and overcame the loss of a starting OH to storm back with a reverse sweep,” DeRuiter added.

Windsor volleyball made news this week twice.
First, the Jaguars eclipsed 30 wins for the season on Oct. 24, the first time in school history. That same night, Windsor clinched a league threepeat.
Second, on Oct. 29, senior OH Haven Trechter went over 1,000 career kills, only the second player in program history to reach four figures.

Palo Alto beat Los Altos in four sets on Monday to clinch the Santa Clara Valley – De Anza League title outright. A year ago, the Vikings defeated Los Gatos 15-8 in the fifth on the road to clinch the league outright. This year, Paly’s 15-8 Game 5 win on the road at Los Gatos a week ago Wednesday put the Vikings in position to win league outright again with the win five days later over Los Altos. Both Maura Hambly and Mackenzie Zhao were standouts in the win over Los Gatos.
Palo Alto has now won its league in seven of the past nine seasons.
